Allie Dickerson
“The gallery’s high standards and commitment to fostering artistic growth have been evident in every aspect of the residency, from the organization of events to the day-to-day support provided. This level of professionalism has greatly contributed to the success of my residency and has set a standard that inspires me in my own practice. Their support and the interactions with fellow artists and visitors has significantly expanded my vision. Engaging with other artists and members of the community has offered new perspectives and invaluable feedback, enriching my work in ways I hadn’t anticipated.” -Allie Dickerson
Allie began her 3-month residency on June 28, 2024 and completed on September 28, 2024. This unique opportunity allows the artist to create their new body of work in the heart of the gallery, visible to the public throughout the process.
The eight works completed during this residency blend oil painting, collage, and embroidery on linen and explore themes of growth, healing, and emotional release. Dickerson’s layered approach reflects a deep connection to the work of shamanic author Martín Prechtel, who speaks of grief and praise as a dual force within the human experience. Drawing from Prechtel’s writings particularly his reflections on theMayan language and the healing power of grief, Dickerson’s work unfolds like a story. The oil paint on linen represents the raw, unvarnished process of grief, while the collage elements incorporate personal fragments, creating a tactile narrative that speaks to memory loss and the impermanence of life. Her use of mixed media allows her to create pieces that are not only visually striking but also deeply tactile, evoking the feeling of resilience and strength rising from vulnerability.
